Job Description:

Assumes the accountability and responsibility as a professional nurse for providing total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient centered care for an assigned group of patients.  Provides direct patient contact, which includes assessing the patient, developing a comprehensive nursing plan of care, implementing aspects of nursing care to meet identified patient care outcomes, evaluating the effectiveness of a nursing plan of care and education of patients/care givers who require infusion therapy and other nursing services.  Follows established nursing objectives, standards, policies, and procedures. Practices within the defined scope of practice for the Registered Nurse and commits to providing safe, quality infusion nursing care.

Job Responsibilities

1. Assessment:

  • Collects patient data and completes required documentation with appropriate responses according to unit standards.
  • Completes toxicity screen on all patients.
  • Updates allergies in Electronic Medical Record.
  • Updates patients’ current medication in Electronic Medical Record.
  • Identifies patients’ problems/needs and sets priorities.
  • Identifies problems requiring further referral and/or follow-up.
  • Interprets and records latest diagnostic results.
  • Performs nursing assessment using critical thinking skills.
  • Provides information to physicians and other Health Care Professionals of changes in patients’ condition.

2. Education:

  • Educates the patient and caregivers about the disease process, side effects and health promotion.
  • Documents the education provided to the patient or caregiver and the assessment of the patients or caregivers comprehension.
  • Explains nursing procedures. Provides discharge teaching.
  • Participates in orientation of new personnel through preceptorship, personnel and documenting
  • Follows attendance and tardy policy
  • Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts
  • Recognizes and follows chain of command for addressing and resolving departmental issues

3. Planning Care:

  • Develops a plan of care based on nursing process, which incorporates the plans of other disciplines and continuing care needs.
  • Includes the patient/family in developing or revising the plan of care.
  • Makes referrals to multidisciplinary support services.

4. Implementing/Managing Care:

  • Care provided conforms to accepted practice standards (ONS)
  • Provides treatments/procedures and other care as prescribed and according to patient care standards and plan of care
  • Demonstrates understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served.
  • Explains nursing procedures
  • Provides discharge teaching
  • Identifies emergency situations and independently initiates appropriate actions
  • Acts as an advocate and coordinator of patient care with other health care personnel and evaluates patient care measures instituted.

Job Requirements

  • Current state Registered Nurse License required
  • Bachelor of Science Degree required or enrolled within 6 months of hire and  completed within 3 years from hire date
  • Current BLS required
  • ACLS preferred
  • Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Chemotherapy certification preferred
  • Current Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Card or must obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Minimum  2 years in oncology and/or medical-surgical units preferred
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary approach to patient care
  • Excellent infusion therapy-related skills (peripheral and central lines)
