Job Overview

The respiratory care practitioner is a professional caregiver who assesses the respiratory needs of patients and works closely with physicians, nurses, and other health care team members to administer all respiratory care procedures that provide the maximum therapeutic and diagnostic benefit to the patient. The respiratory care practitioner also administers non-invasive cardiology procedures dependent to the individual’s capabilities and training, i.e. EKG, HOLTER

Knows indications, contraindications and equipment for basic respiratory therapies, including oxygen, aerolized medication, humidity, volume expansion, secretion clearance and arterial blood gas sampling, analyzer and machine maintenance. Knows, indications and contraindications and equipment for ventilator support, including non-invasive and volume ventilators. Ability to set up, check functionality and clean all types of ventilators.

Ability to document verbal order, assessments, teaching interventions and therapy notes in the medical and departmental electronic medical record. Is able to intervene appropriately based on changes in patient status. Notifies appropriate RN and MD.

Performs as a member of the Rapid Response and Code Team. Duties to include all phases of airway management, ABG draws, CPR, EKG, and ventilator support when needed.

Can perform 12 lead EKG’s, knows correct lead placement and able to recognize artifact and ominous findings.

Cleans, assembles and tests equipment per department policy. Identifies equipment problems and notifies lead therapist and manager.

Knows where all supplies are stored in the department and throughout the hospital and who to contact to order supplies. Knows where to find test results, i.e. EKG, HOLTER, PFT’s. Know how to operate the department fax machine.

Education/Experience Level

• Current Georgia license as a Respiratory Therapist (or eligible for immediate Georgia licensure).

• RRT-Registered

• Required - minimum Associate Degree and 1 year experience

• BLS/CPR and ACLS required.

• Ability to perform EKG’s required; experience with PFT’s and/or bedside spirometry preferred.

Placement within the identified pay range is based on individual and market factors including, but not limited to, experience, education, credentials (including licenses and certifications), geographic location, market competition, skill set (including market availability of required skills), assigned/anticipated job tasks, and level of responsibility.  These factors are considered without regard to an individual’s status as a member of any protect group pursuant to federal, state, and/or local law.
