Job Overview

Provides leadership to licensed and non-licensed nursing staff as demonstrated by prescribing, delegating, and coordinating oncology nursing care for optimum patient outcomes. Plans and implements overall nursing policies, procedures and services for a unit within the hospital.  Maintains nursing staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training clinical staff.  Ensures that nurses are current in competencies, assessments, licensure, certification and other annual training.  May provide direct patient care  and assesses, plans care and evaluates patients.

Job Accountabilities

  1. Guides, motivates, and develops staff by providing timely and appropriate feedback throughout the year.  Ensures annual goals are finalized and review is provided on time and with appropriate input
    • Effectively communicates the mission of the organization/department to staff such that mission guides day-to-day activities
    • Effectively prioritizes staff and department work such that short and long-term benefits are balanced in day-to-day decision-making and problem solving
    • Effectively plans resources in order to achieve CTCA goals regarding turnaround time and overall patient satisfaction.
    • Works with all direct reports on career development plans, and has a clear succession plan in place.
  2. Performs a variety of tasks including leading and directing the work of other nursing staff.  Follows and evaluates the nursing process in ongoing assessment, planning of care, provision of care and evaluation of the outcome (i.e. adverse reaction) to the care delivered.
  3. Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and available unit resources of time, personnel, equipment and supplies. Implements and demonstrates care in a knowledgeable, skillful, consistent and continuous manner .
  4. Responds to all patient-orientated emergencies, informing appropriate persons and documenting events.
  5. Plans work flow to assure timely completion of relevant responsibilities.  Seeks validation of knowledge base, skill level, and decision making as necessary and assertively seeks out guidance in areas of question.
  6. Completes and submits all necessary monthly, quarterly, yearly reports within a prescribed time frame as directed by administration (i.e. monthly progress report, quarterly CQI reports).


  • State RN license required. 
  • Graduate from approved Bachelor of Science Nursing program 
  • At least five years of RN clinical experience and at least three years in an acute health care setting. 
  • Experience with oncology patients preferred
  • Three years previous management experience-healthcare preferred
  • Current CPR certification
  • Oncology Nursing Society’s (ONS) Chemotherapy Certified preferred

Knowledge and Skill

  • Familiar with a variety of the nursing field’s concepts, practices and procedures. 
  • Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Knowledge and competency in current nursing practices which encompass age specific criteria
  • Experience with budgeting and staffing projections
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to interact with a wide variety of individuals and handle several complex situations simultaneously.
  • Demonstrates the willingness and ability to research learn and obtain knowledge for the performance of the position.
  • Demonstrates the ability to utilize critical thinking and apply sound clinical judgment and assessment skills for decision making
  • Must be a critical thinker and able to prioritize effectively.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a proven ability to take initiative, work interdependently, problem solve, and to meet goals and timeframes.
  • Communication skills as an integrator for coordinating clinical care will be an asset.
