The genetic counselor works with the care team(s) to identify patients who may be candidates for cancer genetic testing. Meet with patients and family members to educate and counsel them on the role of genes and heredity in the development of cancer. Discuss the risks and benefits of genetic testing. Determine coverage of testing from the insurance provider (when applicable). Work in collaboration with the physician to discuss test results and medical recommendations. Provide education and in-service training as needed.
Key Position Qualifications
Masters of Science degree in Genetic Counseling or Medical Genetics from an accredited program
Board Certified or Eligible by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, with continued employment contingent on passing certification exam within a six months of start date. Cancer Treatment Centers of America will help with obtaining licensure.
Licensure, full or temporary (prior to passing ABGC certification exam), in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania and other states as directed by Manager/supervisor. CTCA will help obtian licenseure in IL, OK and PA.
