Job Description:

Potential Remote position but prefer local candidates

Must have CTR registration

Under supervision of the cancer registry manager, the Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) reviews a variety of case finding sources to identify patients to be reported to the state and national databases according to regulation.  The CTR reviews patient documentation and diagnostic information to assign and report codes for diagnosing and treating cancers.  The CTR performs tasks as needed to comply with all cancer program accreditation

The Cancer Registrar also:

  • Abstract all enterprise cancer cases, analytic and non-analytic, according to policy and procedure, assign codes for treatments, procedures and diagnoses according to appropriate classification systems such as: ICD-9-CM; ICD-10-CM; ICD-O-3; American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS CoC) Guidelines; Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS); American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) Tumor, Nodes, Metastasis (TNM) & Collaborative Staging/Coding; and Surveillance of Epidemiology and End Results(SEER) guidelines. (70%)
  • Perform daily case finding of cancer cases as indicated per cancer registry policy and procedure. (10%)
  • Assist in coordinating cancer committee meetings.  Serve as the required CTR member of the cancer committee.  Take minutes and assist with completing the survey application record. (10%)
  • Organize cancer conferences according to cancer registry policy and procedure and in compliance   with Commission on Cancer.  (10%)

Education/Experience Level

  • Certified Tumor Registrar (with Associates Degree in HIM) required, with at least 8 years experience.
  • Previous experience required performing hospital abstracting and knowledge of submission to state registries.
  • Previous experience in managing stakeholders
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • College Degree or Associate Degree Preferred

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office - specifically Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook required
  • Knowledge of Excel Tables and Data Bases
  • Knowledge of ICDO and ICD9 coding required
  • Knowledge of Electronic Health Record (EHR) required
  • General office skills in typing required
  • Computer skills required.  Knowledge in cancer software data basis; (for example) Rocky Mountain IMPAC (Metriq), CNEX, ERS, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience with medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.  Oncology work setting a plus.
